Managing Trauma & Stress

What Are Sense-Based Activities?

We experience life through our senses of sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, and spirit. Our senses also help us heal. After all, our senses bring us joy. However, most of us neglect our senses more than we should, which leads to low energy, boredom, dissatisfaction with life, and a sense of overwhelm.

What Is Nervous System Dysregulation?

If you've visited my about me page, you know I live with the Herpes Simplex Virus. I don’t mind telling you that in the beginning I used to focus only on treating my herpes symptoms, but as flares became more frequent, I started paying attention to HSV triggers. But my outbreaks didn't fully line up with those things. What I mean is that I couldn’t tie my outbreaks to the same things every time. For example, I could eat a ton of arginine-rich foods, and herpes wouldn’t reactivate, but a couple of months later, after doing the same thing, it might result in a rash of blisters. There was no pattern.

What Are the 5 Levels of Healing?

When it comes to healing, you might think of your doctor, who runs tests and prescribes medicine for your body, your counselor, who helps heal your mind, or your pastor, who helps heal your heart. But you're more than body, mind, and spirit. While you are here, there are five levels of healing.

Why Is Hormonal Balance So Essential?

The endocrine system produces hormones that influence many aspects of our health, including the immune system. Hormonal balance is essential for managing stress, stress-related symptoms, and overlapping conditions. Why? Because hormones keep us happy and functioning optimally, and chronic imbalances cause inflammation in the body, leading to diseases (think Diabetes and other autoimmune syndromes) and more frequent and severe herpes outbreaks. Here's what you need to know about your adrenal, thyroid, liver, and ovarian hormones, and how to keep them up to par.

How Do I Pinpoint Hidden Stress?

Most of the time, you probably know what's stressing you out in the moment. It's getting a flat tire on the way to work, being stood up on a date, a late fee on a bill you forgot to pay, a wailing baby, or that cashier who won't stop talking to the customer in front of you about last night's escapade.

Why Should I Engage With Nature?

The Earth and everything in nature have an electrical frequency that can help raise your vibration and ease stress. When we aren't connected to the Earth, we can lose our bearings and develop stressful symptoms. Grounding, also known as Earthing, is a stress-management technique that uses Earth's electrical charges to enhance cellular function, calm the heart, reduce pain and fatigue by supporting the healing process, and improve mood by connecting to the Earth. One of the best things you can do is spend 20-30 minutes outdoors in nature to absorb these energies and become more grounded and relaxed. This can help you avoid herpes outbreaks.

What Does it Mean to Be a Highly Sensitive Person?

According to psychologist Elaine Aron, Highly Sensitive People comprise about 15-20% of the population and "are high in a personality trait known as Sensory-Processing Sensitivity, which displays increased emotional sensitivity, stronger reactivity to external and internal stimuli (pain, hunger, light, and noise), and a complex inner life."

How Do I Calm My "Inner FISH"?

Inside your brain are two small, prehistoric organs called the amygdalae, which I refer to as your inner fish. Your amygdalae (there are two) manage your emotions and your "fight, flight, or freeze" response. When you're constantly in fight-or-flight mode, you become fatigued, irritable, sad, and hypersensitive (FISH).

Why Should Do Breathing Exercises?

Most of us don't think much about breathing until we can't, but something happens as we breathe (besides getting air) that is crucial to our health and wellness. We are balancing our oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. Whenever we breathe in, we take in oxygen (and our red blood cells fill with it). Whenever we breathe out, we release carbon dioxide, a waste product. If we aren't breathing correctly, it causes an imbalance, resulting in symptoms such as fatigue, anxiety, and panic attacks.

How Can I Create Calmer, Healthier Spaces?

To enhance your health and wellness, you cannot overlook the importance of your living spaces. When your environment is cluttered or dirty, or you live in a place that doesn't please you, the energy feels negative. On a subconscious and energetic level, you feel this negativity whether you are fully aware of it or not. Ongoing stress lowers your immunity, making it more challenging to prevent and recover from herpes outbreaks and other illnesses. The following information will help you to clean up, organize, and decorate all of your spaces for optimal relaxation and immunity.

What Foods Can I Eat for Peace of Mind?

Inside your brain is a tiny pair of organs called amygdalae. Your amygdalae manage your emotions and mood, which can affect how often you have herpes outbreaks. Imagine, if you will, that your amygdalae are a lot like two small fish, and your brain is their fishbowl. If you have ever owned an aquarium, you know you must use a water conditioner to maintain a balanced pH. The same applies to your brain's ability to experience peace and calm.

Do I Really Need to Exercise?

As a Behavior Modification Instructor, all I had to do to get noses to tip toward the ceiling and eyes to roll sideways was mention the word "exercise." Exercise is often considered synonymous with WORK. However, avoiding exercise isn't an option. Why not? Because it is necessary for oxygenating your body's cells. Without oxygen, your body's cells are depleted of energy, your immune system fails to function correctly, and you end up in pain with a flat rear end.

Does Journaling Really Help to Relieve Stress?

One way to reduce stress is to get your feelings out on paper, which is why journaling is often recommended. It's a powerful emotional outlet that can reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety, trauma, and feelings of Depression. It can also improve your physical health by lowering physical health markers, which boosts immunity. It can also improve your outlook, sleep, and energy.

Can Having a Near Death Experience Cause Stress?

Near-death experiences, or NDEs, often trigger being even more sensitive. And even if you're not, we are spirits living in physical bodies. Most of us don't remember what heaven was like, but for those who have crossed over and come back, that memory can deepen our sense of spirit and, possibly, our sensitivity to life as well. I experienced this in my own life at about 10 years old when I drowned, and again when my heart stopped on the operating table when I hemorrhaged after giving birth to my youngest son.

How Can I Get a Good Night's Sleep?

The human circadian rhythm is as old as time. People are meant to be awake during the daylight and asleep at night. In the modern world, this is almost unheard of. How Does My Immune System Work?

There are two types of immunity: innate and acquired. Your innate immune response is the one you receive at birth. As you passed through your mother's birthing canal, you came into contact with microorganisms from her vagina and rectum. You also received organisms through breast milk and, if you were bottle-fed, through your formula. These microbes have developed in and on you as you've aged. They outnumber your body cells by trillions. They are known as your microbiome.

What Are Genetically Appropriate Foods?

Our ancestors didn't eat refined, GMO, or fast foods. Until about 100 years ago, humans ate the same foods they always had, based on the seasons and what was available. We ate what was found in our backyards. We foraged, picked, and hunted. Furthermore, the soil was richer back then and supplied plants with the minerals we needed to stay healthy. Today's soil is often depleted of nutrients, and plants are consequently less nutritious than ever. Did you know that wheat (the kind our forefathers ate) no longer exists? Today's wheat is genetically modified and harmful. Why do we think we can eat these "new foods" and stay healthy? We can't, not without causing bodily inflammation and health issues.

What Vitamins & Supplements Do I Need for Good Health?

I'm not keen on suggesting you take any supplement long-term. Individual supplements lack the synergy needed for optimal health and aren't a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. Take vitamin C, for example. When you eat an orange, you receive a daily dose of vitamin C, fiber, sugar, protein, vitamin A, and calcium. Unless blended with other nutrients, a vitamin C supplement contains ascorbic acid. That's it.

What About Specialty Supplements for HSV

Basic vitamins and minerals are necessary for optimal health and wellness. These are discussed here. Here, I list only those supplements known to specifically target the Herpes Simplex Virus and may help reduce the frequency or severity of herpes outbreaks, unless you have nervous system dysregulation. In that case, they may not work optimally while you're restoring regulation but can still help. My top three suggestions are quercetin, lysine, and spirulina. Spirulina contains slightly more arginine than lysine, but the benefits far outweigh the risk of being overcautious with this superfood, as long as you don't consume spirulina daily.

Chronic Pain & Headache

Pain is often misunderstood. It can be hard to relieve pain if you aren't familiar with how pain works. For most of us, pain is just pain. We know how it feels and wish to be rid of it. To eliminate stubborn pain, you first need to understand its origin, which is more complex than you think. Head pain may not come from inside your head, even though it feels that way. Gut pain may stem from uncomfortable emotions, and pain radiating down your leg may come from a pinched nerve in your lower back.

Either way, whether one believes in God or not, emotions play a role. From here on, for the sake of simplicity, I'll be referring to Fibromyalgia Syndrome as FS.

Histamine Intolerance

Mast cells play a crucial role in both innate and adaptive immune responses. They are highly present throughout the body. Mast cells release histamine, a neurotransmitter and chemical messenger that signals between nerves. It does this through histamine receptors in the nose, mouth, central nervous system (CNS), circulatory system, sensory nerves, lungs, heart, gastrointestinal smooth muscle, adrenal medulla, immune cells, bladder muscle, and feet. In the brain, the posterior hypothalamus produces histamine, which helps maintain homeostasis (balance) in the body.

Hypothyroidism

The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland that sits at the base of your throat and works with your hypothalamus (in your brain) and pituitary (at the base of your neck) glands to produce thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), which prompts the thyroid gland to produce thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). The thyroid gland helps regulate many functions, including how well you metabolize and digest food, energy levels, speech, and sleep patterns. It regulates cellular energy through adenosine triphosphate (ATP). I like to think of ATP as God (and Goddess) particles. Click here to learn how to preserve and energize these particles.
