Will Herpes Go Away When I'm Older?

Contrary to what you may hear, the Herpes Simplex Virus doesn't "get better" as you age. In most cases, herpes outbreaks become more frequent and severe. Why? Because as you age, your immune system doesn't function as well. This can pose problems in your middle years and worsen as you get older.

A weakened immune system can't control herpes, can cause herpes to become systemic, and lead to secondary infections. So, can herpes kill you? Not directly, but it often leads to a higher mortality risk in the aged due to poor immunity. For example, people over 70 have one of the highest mortality rates from encephalitis (swelling of the brain) if untreated. Even though genital herpes (HSV-2) rarely travels to the brain, age-related immune decline makes atypical presentations more common.

Additionally, older adults living with coexisting conditions, such as Diabetes, Cancer, heart disease, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), autoimmune illnesses, HIV, organ transplants, chronic steroid use, or who are frail or malnourished, are at greater risk of atypical symptoms. HSV can also make these conditions worse, due to viral inflammation.

In older people, there's also the risk of sepsis caused by secondary infections, especially those with Diabetes or vascular insufficiency. There's also the possibility of kidney disease and toxicity caused by antiviral medications.

There's evidence supporting the use of the following supplements to help prevent herpes-related problems as you age.

  • Vitamin D (very effective for viral suppression; keep levels 40–60 ng/mL)
  • Vitamin C (1,000–2,000 mg/day unless kidney stones are an issue)
  • Zinc (15–30 mg/day for non-anemic individuals)
  • B12 (common deficiency in seniors; supports nerve health)

These lifestyle tips are also supportive in your later years.

  • Daily movement or walking improves immune function
  • Good sleep hygiene (lack of sleep triggers outbreaks)
  • Hydration to prevent antiviral drug accumulation
  • Stress management (stress is a major HSV trigger)

Since all of us are headed to "old age", it's best to start incorporating these supplements and lifestyle changes into our lives today. And no matter how old you are, it's never too late to begin to optimize your immunity. The Anti-HSV Cauldron can help.
