Scriptural Stones & Crystals

As stones and crystals are known for their metaphysical properties, I decided to explore historical texts to identify any stones and crystals mentioned in the Qur'an, the Talmud, and the Bible that are believed to possess special powers. Here is what I discovered.

Stones & Crystals Mentioned In The Qur'an

 

Coral, Pearls, and Rubies are mentioned in the Qur'an to describe beauty. However, stones and crystals are not believed to possess any healing properties.

 

  • "...they are like rubies and coral" [al-Rahmaan 55:58]
  • "Out of them both come out pearl and coral" [al-Rahmaan 55:22]
  • "Like unto preserved pearls" [al-Waaqi'ah 56:23]

 

 

Stones & Crystals In The Talmud

 

There were 12 stones, one for each of the tribes of Israel. Each stone was associated with metaphysical attributes.

 

  • Ruben: Odem (Ruby/Carnelian). Helps childbirth.
  • Shimon: Pitda (Chrysolite/Emerald). Cools the body.
  • Levi: Bareket (Onyx/Topaz). Enlightenment.
  • Judah: Nofech (Malachite/Carbuncle). Overpower enemies.
  • Yissachar: Sapir (Lapis Lazuli/Sapphire). Helps eyesight, healing. Additionally, the 12 commandments were written on Sapphire.
  • Zevulun: Yahalom (Zircon/Diamond). Helps sleep.
  • Dan: Leshem (Jacinth/Zircon).
  • Naftali: Shvo (Agate). Helps with riding.
  • Gad: Achlamah (Amethyst). Bravery.
  • Asher: Tarshish (Topaz/Aquamarine). Helps digestion.
  • Joseph: Shoham (Beryl/Onyx). Perceived well by all.
  • Benjamin: Yashpeh (Jasper). Helps blood-clotting.

 

Rabbeinu's Bechaye claims that for the stones' powers to work, one must be ritually pure. Otherwise, the stones may not work or may even be harmful to a person.
