Sense of Sound: Sound-Based Activities

Sound-based activities correspond with the Phlegmatic Temperament, Phlegm, Cold/Wet, Water Element, the Tarot Suit of Cups, Winter, the Soul Body, Tree of Life: World of Briah (Creation), Heart (Anahata) and Throat (Visuddha) Chakras, the Blue and Green Aura Color Personalities, the Emotion of Sadness, Touch and Sound, and VAM (part of God’s name).

  • Studies show that the purring sound a cat makes when it is content can help alleviate arthritis symptoms. Give your cat some love.

  • Listen to your child breathing while asleep, a bird chirping, a creek babbling, or soft, soft music. Listen to the silence, which is one sound we all get too little of. How often do you sit in silence or, for that matter, sleep in silence?

  • Turn off the TV and the radio when you are not really listening.

  • If you're feeling lonely, call a friend and truly listen to their voice without being distracted.

  • Visit a friend with children and listen to them laughing and running through the house (good medicine). After a while, you probably won't mind returning to quiet, but you'll return feeling fuller.

  • Play an instrumenteven if you don't know how to play it. Shake a rattle (or a can full of buttons or beans). Shaking rattles chase away negative energy and give us an immediate boost.

  • Listen to music from a genre or culture you are not familiar with.

  • If you have trouble sleeping or experience Tinnitus (constant ringing in one or both ears), consider investing in CDs featuring nature sounds or string instrumentals (such as violin, harp, cello, mandolin, ruan, or guitar) to help you fall asleep more quickly. Some HSPs are partial to the piano. Either way, it is the softer side of music that heals.

  • Tuning forks help to balance your body's natural energy flow. When tapped, they vibrate at a specific frequency and produce a distinct sound. When held against the body (there's a whole science to this), they heal you emotionally and physically. Tuning Fork Therapy could also be included under the sense of "Touch".

  • Go outside and listen to nature, the birds' sound in the air, the wind in your hair.
