Overlapping Conditions

The Herpes Simplex Virus is known to cause or exacerbate certain conditions, such as anxiety, Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, and IBS, which is why you'll find holistic alternatives for overlapping conditions listed below.

Holistic Alternatives for Stress & Herpes-Related Conditions

Adrenal Burnout Syndrome

Adrenal Burnout Syndrome, also known as Adrenal Fatigue, Adrenal Exhaustion, or Burnout, occurs when your body’s energy system slows down. You may feel drained, run down, and more vulnerable to illness. But the good news is your body knows how to heal. By supporting your adrenal glands and restoring balance, you can regain strength, clarity, and vitality.

Burning Mouth Syndrome

Burning Mouth Syndrome is common in older men experiencing Andropause, women undergoing various stages of menopause, and individuals who habitually chew on toothpicks, bite the inside of their cheek, or thrust their tongue against their teeth. It's not contagious unless caused by a bacterial or viral infection, which is unlikely unless accompanied by a white coating of the tongue or mouth sores.

Colds, Flu & COVID-19

We've all seen it. Someone coughs, and everyone fans out in opposite directions to get away as quickly as possible. Is it an allergy or something more? Here's what you need to know about the differences between colds, influenza, and COVID-19.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is often called by other names, such as Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS) and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME). There can be abnormalities in the Central Nervous System (CNS) in individuals with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, which is included under the "CFS" umbrella but differs slightly from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The hypothalamus regulates sleep, temperature, and appetite.

Chronic Pain & Headache

Pain is often misunderstood. It can be hard to relieve pain if you aren't familiar with how pain works. For most of us, pain is just pain. We know how it feels and wish to be rid of it. To eliminate stubborn pain, you first need to understand its origin, which is more complex than you think. Pain in your head may not come from inside your head, even though it feels that way. Pain in your gut may be caused by uncomfortable emotions, and pain radiating down your leg may be induced by a pinched nerve in your lower back.

Dry Mouth Syndrome

The clinical name for Dry Mouth Syndrome is Xerostomia (pronounced ZEER-oh-STOH-mee-ah). Sicca Syndrome may or may not be related to Sjögren's Disease (an autoimmune disorder). It is often associated with Fibromyalgia Syndrome.

Fibromyalgia Syndrome

Nine out of 10 people with Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FS) are women. Women are naturally more receptive and hold their emotions close (and inside their cells). Studies show that God-fearing women appear to be the most affected. It could be that the burdens placed upon them by the modern world are too heavy for their old-world hearts. Either way, whether one believes in God or not, emotions play a role. From here on, for the sake of simplicity, I'll be referring to Fibromyalgia Syndrome as FS.

Histamine Intolerance

Mast cells play a crucial role in both innate and adaptive immune responses. They are highly present throughout the body. Mast cells release histamine, a neurotransmitter and a chemical messenger that sends messages between nerves. It does this through histamine receptors in the nose, mouth, central nervous system (CNS), circulatory system, sensory nerves, lungs, heart, gastrointestinal smooth muscle, adrenal medulla, immune cells, bladder muscle, and feet. In the brain, histamine is produced in the Posterior Hypothalamus, which helps maintain homeostasis (balance) in the body.

Hypothyroidism

The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland that sits at the base of your throat and works with your hypothalamus (in your brain) and pituitary (at the base of your neck) glands to produce thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), which prompts the thyroid gland to produce thyroxine (T-4) and triiodothyronine (T-3). The thyroid gland performs checks and balances on various functions, including how well you metabolize and digest food, regulate energy levels, produce speech, and control sleep patterns. It regulates cellular energy through adenosine triphosphate (ATP). I like to think of ATP as God (and Goddess) particles. I talk about how to preserve and energize these particles here.

Irritable Bladder Syndrome

Over 400 million people in the United States experience bladder discomfort, and about 90% of them are women. While bladder pain can feel overwhelming, there are many causes, solutions, and ways to support healing. Understanding your body is the first step toward reclaiming comfort and control.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is often caused by emotional stress, unbalanced gut microbiota (more bad bugs than good), and eating trigger foods (which may differ for different people). Although IBS can make you feel you're about to die, you'll be happy to know there is no evidence that IBS will ever cause disease or kill you. However, complications from severe constipation or diarrhea can occur. Thankfully, holistic alternatives and medications can prevent that from happening. Also, an illness or disease can mimic IBS symptoms, so it's essential to rule out underlying conditions.

Menopause

Some women sail through menopause, hardly noticing. Most are happy they are no longer having periods and find the personal freedom of not worrying about getting pregnant adds to the richness of their sex life. By the time we reach our 50s, most of us have shifted our priorities from ego-based love to appreciating true intimacy, which is all well and good, except for those of us who are highly sensitive. When you're sensitive, live with a chronic condition, or coexist with Herpes Simplex Virus, menopause may be the time in your life when you're bombarded with many challenging symptoms, including more frequent and severe herpes outbreaks.

Sleep Disorder

Deep sleep is crucial for maintaining health and overall well-being. If you aren't sleeping well, your body can't heal properly, which affects your mood and immunity. Not enough sleep can lead to stress-related symptoms and more frequent and severe herpes outbreaks.

Sugar Disease

Sugar is naturally found in grains, fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Refined sugars are found in bread, donuts, cereals, and table sugar. The body converts all sugars into glucose for energy, primarily by releasing insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. Due to their diet or inherited genes, some individuals struggle to process insulin-regulating sugar in their body's cells.

How HSV & Conditions Can Overlap

Fibromyalgia & Chronic Pain: Central sensitization keeps the nervous system in a state of heightened alert. Pain thresholds decline, inflammation increases, and viral suppression becomes less effective. Because chronic pain places ongoing stress on the body and may affect sleep, stress levels, and immune function, some women may experience more frequent herpes outbreaks when living with persistent pain. HSV flares often increase during pain flares.

Chronic Fatigue & Adrenal Burnout: When energy reserves are low, the immune system struggles to maintain latency. Fatigue, post-exertional crashes, and viral reactivation frequently track together.

Anxiety & Depression: Stress hormones, neurotransmitters, and vagal tone all influence immune balance. Emotional strain can trigger outbreaks, while inflammatory signaling from viral activity can worsen mood symptoms.

IBS & Histamine Intolerance: The gut is a major interface between the immune and nervous systems. Stress alters gut permeability and mast cell behavior, increasing histamine load and inflammatory signaling that can correlate with HSV activity.

Interstitial Cystitis: Pelvic tissues share nerve pathways and immune sensitivity. In already-sensitized tissue, HSV can act as an inflammatory amplifier rather than the sole cause.

Dizziness & Sleep Disorders: Autonomic imbalance affects blood pressure regulation, sleep quality, and immune resilience. Poor sleep reduces viral suppression, creating a feedback loop.

Hypothyroidism & Menopause: Hormonal transitions influence inflammation, immune behavior, and nervous system resilience. Many people notice increased HSV activity during perimenopause, menopause, or thyroid instability.

Sugar Disease (Diabetes): Because diabetes can impair immune function and the body’s ability to heal, some women with diabetes may experience more frequent or longer-lasting herpes outbreaks, particularly when blood sugar levels are poorly controlled.

Colds, Flu & COVID-19: You may notice that you experience an outbreak around the same time you come down with another virus. Viruses cause inflammation, which triggers herpes to reactivate.

Sleep Disorders: Because quality sleep supports immune function and the body’s ability to manage stress, ongoing sleep problems or a lack of restorative rest may make some women more vulnerable to herpes outbreaks by placing additional stress on the immune system.

Vaginal Complaints: Because vaginal conditions such as Bacterial Vaginosis, Vaginitis, and Vaginal Atrophy can cause irritation and inflammation, they may contribute to herpes reactivation in some women, although this does not occur in everyone.

Note: The conditions listed above can affect anyone, even those who don't live with HSV. However, these conditions often surfaced in my research as either caused by the herpes virus, worsened by it, or associated with Nervous System Dysregulation, which is a cause of more frequent and severe herpes outbreaks.  I discuss NSD and how to reverse it in my book, The Anti-HSV Cauldron: The 4-Week Plan for Reducing HSV Flares
